Eternity 2 - Competition Rules Print E-mail

Eternity II has 256 numbered puzzle pieces. Remove the pieces from the outer frames and check that all pieces (1–256) are present.

We have identified that during the production process some puzzle pieces may become misaligned. If you are unable to determine the colour or shape on any piece of your Eternity II puzzle please contact our UK Careline Team and we will replace the misaligned pieces free of charge.

Please also contact our UK Careline Team should you lose any pieces.

Solving Eternity II

Make a square from all the pieces,
With the grey ones round the border;
Place the starter-piece correctly;
Match all touching pairs of edges –
Do it first and win US$2 Million!

Place starter-piece 139 as shown on the board. Then place all the other pieces, with the grey edges around the outside. Match all colours and symbols on as many adjoining pairs of edges as you can.

When you have placed as many pieces as you can, please complete a copy of the entry form enclosed with your puzzle or download a copy from the 'Downloads' section of this website. In Box 1 at the top of the form, write your name, age, address and a daytime telephone number.

In the small ovals between cells, tick each matching pair of edges, (the colours and the symbols must match). Leave ovals between unmatched pairs of edges blank. Count how many ovals you ticked. Your score (maximum 480) is the total number of correctly-matched pairs of edges. Write your score in box 2 at the top right of the form. In each cell on the form, write and underline the number on the back of the piece you put in that cell on the board.

Tomy UK Ltd. will pay US$2 Million or its equivalent at the prevailing exchange rate to the sender of the first valid entry with a maximum score of 480 matched pairs of edges received after the launch on 28 July 2007 and before noon GMT on 31 December 2010 (or, at Tomy’s discretion, a later date if no winner has been found by then) with all 256 Eternity II puzzle pieces arranged as a 16 x 16 square so that the starting-piece is placed as shown on the board, all the grey edges form the boundary, and all colours and symbols on each edge of every piece are identical to those on the adjacent edge of the neighbouring piece.

Clue Puzzles

To help you to solve the Eternity II prize puzzle, you can solve the smaller puzzles, Clue Puzzles 1 and 2. Form a 6x6 square (Clue Puzzle 1) or 12x6 rectangle (Clue Puzzle 2) with the grey edges around the outside, and match all pairs of adjoining edges. For each Clue Puzzle you solve, submit your solution to obtain a hint that gives the correct position of one piece of the prize puzzle. You can solve the prize puzzle without using the hints, but you must place the starting-piece as shown on the board. Clue Puzzles 3 and 4, each with another hint for the prize puzzle, will launch in 2008. There are no prizes for solving any Clue Puzzle.

Submitting Your Entry

Please put your entry in a sealed envelope with your score written at the top left. Send it by registered mail to Eternity II Adjudicators, 117 Smug Oak Business Centre, Lye Lane, Bricket Wood, ST. ALBANS, AL2 3UG, England, to arrive no later than noon GMT on 31 December 2008, the first scrutiny date, and thereafter, if there is no outright winner, by noon GMT on 31 December 2009 and 2010, the second and third scrutiny dates.

Proof of mailing will not be accepted as proof of delivery. For proof of delivery, please put an unsealed envelope bearing your name and address in an outer envelope addressed to the judges with the words “Proof of delivery please” in the top left corner. Entries will be Tomy’s property and will not be returned.

Terms and conditions

All entries received between the launch and closing dates will be held secure and unopened until the next scrutiny date, when they will be opened and judged in order of receipt. The first entrant with a validated maximum score of 480 matched pairs of edges wins the US$2 Million prize. In the event that two or more such entries are received at the same time and date, the US$2 Million prize will be divided equally between the entrants. If no outright winner is found, Tomy may, at its discretion, announce a lesser prize for the highest-scoring entry since launch. Winners must pay any applicable tax on prizes. Any winner will be notified by post, telephone or email within 14 days of the scrutiny. A winner must allow his or her name, likeness, home town and solution to be used in publicity. The results of each annual scrutiny, the announcement of any winner, and details of partial-solution prizes will be published in the London Times and in the New York Times, and at www.eternityII.com.

Anyone aged 18 or over other than the inventors, Tomy, the judges or associated companies or employees or their families may enter, but entry is not available in The Netherlands, Japan, Germany, Austria, Italy, Florida, Maryland, Vermont, North Dakota or Arizona.

The judges will not be responsible for entries incorrectly addressed, lost, damaged, delayed or destroyed in the mail, and will disqualify entries insufficiently stamped, late, altered, illegible, invalid, over-claiming scores, submitted by entrants under 18 or otherwise contrary to these Rules. To protect other solvers, the judges will disqualify any entry whose existence becomes publicly known before the date of the annual scrutiny following its submission, and any entrant who has publicly disclosed any details of any of the Eternity II pieces in any form or medium.

The sale prices of the Eternity II puzzle and Clue puzzles may vary between countries of sale to take account of prevailing market conditions.

By entering the competition you agree to be bound by these Rules, which the judges will interpret. Their decisions will be final. No correspondence will be entered into. Any entrant who attempts to correspond with the judges will be disqualified. The English text will prevail. English law governs the competition. The English courts shall have exclusive jurisdiction to settle any dispute or claim arising out of or in connection with Eternity II and these Rules. Good luck!
